This Mediterranean Spiced Yogurt Sauce is creamy, fresh and delicious, made with yogurt, cucumber, spices, and topped with fresh mint and lemon zest.
People have been enjoying yogurt for centuries, and in our modern day time yogurt continues to be an important part of our diet. Many of us often have yogurt for breakfast with cereal or granola or even add it on top of fruits and smoothies.
There are endless options to use and enjoy yogurt; many incorporate it in baking recipes, make flavored frozen-yogurt with it, use it in marinades to tenderize meets and put it in different sauces to accompany other dishes.
Over the years this easy to make yogurt sauce has developed from a basic dish to a flavorsome, fresh and tangy food accompaniment. For a long time people around the Mediterranean enjoyed a bowl of full–fat yogurt with a tinge of garlic, mint and diced cucumber.
However, this simple dish has evolved to include more flavors that have made it richer, and enjoyable with many vegetarian and meat dishes.
I added my own twist to this yogurt sauce hoping that you enjoy it as much as I do.
To make this easy Spiced Yogurt Sauce you will need full–fat milk yogurt (low–fat works well too), cucumber, paprika, turmeric, cumin, cayenne, lemon zest, salt and chopped fresh mint.
How to Make Spiced Yogurt Sauce
Start by cutting the cucumber into small pieces, I usually slit the cucumber to two equal parts and scrap the flesh and seeds with a spoon.
In a mixing bowl whisk the yogurt, chopped cucumber, paprika, turmeric, cumin, lemon zest, salt and chopped fresh mint. Cover and store in the refrigerator until serving time.
Garnish with lemon zest, some paprika and a couple fresh mint leaves upon serving.
